Full Contact is a semi-autobiographical story told in parts where each chapter is a fight. Our hero, Zach, doesn't know how to say no to a good brawl. Fortunately, he doesn't know how to lose one either. But for all of Zach's superhuman powers in the ring, the human world eludes him. Behind all the crunchy, wet gore Zach metes out--and meets with--lies a good heart baffled by the challenges of daily living, deeply loving, and simply staying out of trouble.

Following Zach on his journey through the fighting world has been a wonderful journey for me. Full Contact Chapter Ten The End eBook Daniel Kucan Reviews
It sneaks up on you. The phrase that finally delivers the meaning of what you've been reading in this writer's staggeringly beautiful saga "Full Contact". "Why is sorrow the measure of love?" I can personally say that my life is about as far removed from the world of Kucan's hero as one can possibly get. But as you read these chapters, an amazing thing happens. Amazing because you're in such capable hands. You begin to see and hear and feel this world. Not only does Kucan follow Elmore Leonard's dictum of "leaving out the parts that people tend to skip", the parts he leaves in are full of grace and emotion and energy and astonishingly realistic detail. Even if you don't readily understand the exotic names for some of the fighting moves described in this poignant saga, it doesn't matter. They seep into your brain and you somehow know what they mean and what they look like. And even if you have a sense for what might be in store for the richly complicated character of Zach, you want to read every word right to the end. Maybe even twice. A great read. A great story. A great writer.
I don't want to ruin this story for anyone so I'm going to force myself not to say what happens, but it's so rare to find a writer who can set up the rules for a character (like, "this guy never loses" or "this woman always tries to do the right thing but fails") and then manages to follow their own rules for the whole story. Generally, they wimp out at the end. Not Kucan. This whole book is bold, funny, horrifically sad, ambitious, daringly original, and also great fun. What an incredible find. This book is a hidden gem.
I'm not sure how Kucan manages to keep revealing new things about this character even after we feel like we know him all the way down to his "chipped bones." But even at the end, we are shocked at what happens even though it all makes perfect sense in the world that Kucan's created. I was really sad for this story to end. I feel like this ending is just the beginning to something far greater and more satisfying. You will value every page of this book. Each paragraph is packed with scathing insights and wonderful metaphors (I've never read metaphor as good as Kucan's). Reading this made me want to write my own book, or never try to write again. It's that good.
(I read the collected works as one volume, but I'm extending my review to the individual chapters just in case.) An introspective action tale. A philosophical fight story. "Rocky" with an English major's vocabulary. Describe it how you like, this is definitely not your run of the mill martial arts epic. Perhaps most significantly, it's a story about fighting from a guy who has actually taken (and dished out) quite a few roundhouses to the ribs, and describes the experience with vivid, stream-of-consciousness clarity. Fighting in the world of "Full Contact" is not glamorous; it's dirty and painful, and quite often, there are no real winners. There's also quite a bit of philosophy contained in the pages. It's the story of a flawed man trying to make it not just as a fighter, but as a human being.
Following Zach on his journey through the fighting world has been a wonderful journey for me. I've learned a lot about a world I know nothing about without realizing the lesson I was getting until the end. Well written and fun to read! It makes me sad Zach's story has been written and has ended.
